Our piece of Heaven

Our Favorite Vacation Beach House
Looking for a place for a family vacation? The beach house I recommend is Summerhill. Located in the center of Pawleys Island, the house is an equal distance from the North and the South Causeways. Summerhill is a traditional ocean front home, nestled behind protective sand dunes and waving sea oats. Our family has vacationed at Summerhill every year for the last thirty years. During that time my wife, Clare, and I have built sand castles on the beach and caught blue crabs in the marsh with our own five children and now with our grandchildren. During those thirty years the house itself has changed. The owners are meticulous with routine maintenance. But, they have seen to it that Summerhill has kept pace with growing technology. Equipped with a modern kitchen, a high definition television, and in-home Wi-Fi internet access, the house is ideal for families with a wide age range. While Pawleys motto is “arrogantly shabby,” I can assure you there is nothing shabby about Summerhill. Even on the hottest summer nights we have enjoyed air conditioned comfort. Two and one half baths are supplemented by a nice enclosed shower under the house. Even on rainy days, our grandchildren enjoy their riding toys and sidewalk chalk in the spacious paved area under the house. A vacation at Summerhill has the feel of a secluded retreat. We enjoy a cup of coffee in the big oak rocking chairs on the screened front porch as we watch the sun rise over the Atlantic. At low tide the wide beach lends itself to a game of touch football or Frisbee golf. At high tide fishing around the jetties is often productive. Swimming in the ocean is safe and refreshing. After supper our family enjoys a long walk to the inlet to beachcomb. Interesting shells and fossilized sharks teeth are common finds. We take along a kite for the children to fly in those late afternoon sea breezes. The back porch overlooks the marsh. It is the perfect place for brewing sun tea, blowing bubbles, eating supper, and taking in a magnificent sunset. Though it feels secluded, Pawleys Island is less than a mile from US 17. The area offers nearby grocery shopping, hardware stores, pharmacies, and eating establishments from fast foods to fine dining. We enjoy shopping the outdoor produce stands for fresh fruits and vegetables and a favorite seafood shop that carries local shrimp, scallops, and several varieties of fresh fish. Deep sea fishing charters are available at Murrells Inlet to the north or the Georgetown Marina to the south. The area known as Waccamaw Neck is rich in history and in wildlife. A visit to the Pawleys Island Shops is part of every vacation week. Our family has also enjoyed worshiping on Sunday morning at Pawleys Island Chapel. It is within easy walking distance from Summerhill. The informal, non-denominational, forty-five minute service is just right for our family vacation. Pawleys Island is delightful every season of the year. If you are interested in renting the ideal beach house for a family vacation, I can think of no better place than Summerhill. I am pleased to recommend it to you.- Kirk N from Spartanburg, Posted: 08/08/2018
